Intro to Melodic-Style Banjo with Ira Gitlin

Sunday, October 10, 5:00 – 7:00 PM EST

Melodic banjo playing (sometimes called Keith-style or chromatic banjo), pioneered by Bill Keith and Bobby Thompson in the 1960s, is a powerful extension of bluegrass technique that opens up expansive musical vistas. But it can be confusing to those who are new to it. This single-session, two-hour class, aimed at students who have a basic grasp of Scruggs-style playing, will demystify melodic banjo by exploring the principles behind it. We’ll look at how scales are constructed, and use that knowledge to build a couple of useful licks and a fiddle-tune arrangement.
