What is classical guitar? This lecture-style class will discuss what makes classical guitar what it is, from the Renaissance to the present day. Topics will include subgenres, repertoire, composers, technique, and the instruments themselves. Previous musical experience is welcome but not necessary. Whether you are a player, an aficionado, or just want to test the waters this workshop promises to be comprehensive and informative.
Erik Sharar has been teaching students of all ages in a variety of musical styles, including classical, pop, rock, Latin, flamenco and jazz in the DC area and internationally for almost twenty years. Erik provides a strong foundation in the instrument so that his students are prepared to pursue the styles and genres of their ultimate interest. A DC native, he holds a Master of Music from the Peabody Conservatory and received his BA in Guitar Performance from UMBC. Erik is also a seasoned performer and has played for audiences in Italy, Belgium, the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center and 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.
