Using mindfulness practices to enhance music learning and performance with professional musician and SMT teacher, Luke Chohany, and certified mindfulness teacher, Phillip McKnight.
In this 1.5 hour workshop session, we will cover the following.
- Mindfulness basics: the what, how, and why
- How to incorporate mindfulness practices into your playing
- How to practice more efficiently
- How to reduce tension, increase enjoyment and relaxation
- All instruments and skill levels are welcome
Online: Class will be held on the free Zoom video conferencing app. You will need a laptop with a webcam, or a smartphone or tablet (please have Zoom installed and tested before you join the session). LUKE CHOHANY – Having grown up outside of Harrisburg in the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania, Luke currently lives in Baltimore and plays professionally with local folk and jazz groups. He has performed with April Verch, Brad and Ken Kolodner, The Bumper Jacksons, Hot Club of Baltimore, and Baltimore Swing Drop. Beyond Baltimore, Luke has toured the US and internationally with his adventurous folk music duo Nick and Luke. Luke prioritizes a low-stress and fun teaching style. With over a decade of teaching experience, he has developed a simple and practical method, helping his students identify personal blocks so they can learn more quickly and effortlessly. He helps his students learn how to play with good technique and pick up music by ear, emphasizing proper body posture and mechanics to reduce discomfort and maximize enjoyment. Luke specializes in bluegrass, jazz, country, and old-time music, and is comfortable teaching in just about any style.
PHILLIP KNIGHT – is a certified mindfulness meditation teacher accredited by the International Mindfulness Teacher’s Association. Phillip has experience teaching a wide variety of ages, backgrounds, and abilities and uses his MA in Instructional Systems Design to determine the needs of the participant and help them develop skills in mindfulness meditation with tools for body, heart, mind, and community.
