Private Lessons

Private lessons at the School of Musical Traditions are designed for individual students who want to meet regularly with a teacher. Lessons are catered to the specific interests and goals of our students.

We schedule lessons weekly for 30, 45, or 60 minutes. We provide opportunities for students to collaborate and perform in a variety of settings. In-person lessons are available in our Rockville and Takoma Park studios. Online lessons are also available.

We are often but not always able to reschedule student absences. Please contact the studio and your teacher as soon as you know you will miss a lesson, and we will attempt to reschedule.

Students may discontinue lessons at the end of any month. You must provide written (email) notice by the 20th of the final month of lessons.

Students enroll for weekly lessons for the full term. The fall, winter, and spring terms are typically 12 – 14 weeks in length. Stay tuned for details about the summer term.

The term cost includes one free week, to be used at any time during that term. This allows you to miss one lesson or receive an extra lesson at no additional cost.

Policies

Receipt of initial payment and consent to terms & conditions is required prior to the first lesson.

All lesson payments are securely processed through our studio management system, My Music Staff.

All students receive an invoice on the 20th of each month for the upcoming month of lessons (eg Sept 20 for October lessons).

Students may elect to either (1) save credit/debit card or bank account information in the secure system for automatic payments, or (2) pay invoices manually.

Payment is due by the 26th of the month. Cards saved to the secure system will be charged on the 26th.

Payment not received by 6 days after the due date will incur a late fee of $11.

The School of Musical Traditions does not provide refunds for lessons missed by the student.

30 minutes: $40.00
45 minutes: $60.00
60 minutes: $75.00

Students who wish to discontinue lessons must notify us by email by the 22nd of your final month of lessons to allow time to process your request.

Students who provide late notice (after payment has been processed and before the 1st of the month) may elect a 50% refund or 100% credit to be used within 1 calendar year.

As of the 1st of the month, all payments are final.

Students who miss a lesson may be able to reschedule their lesson. We are often but not always able to reschedule student absences. Please contact the studio and your teacher as soon as you know you will be absent.

For students enrolled in the term billing plan: The term cost includes one free week, to be used at any time during that term. This allows you to miss one lesson or receive an extra lesson at no additional cost.

The School of Musical Traditions does not provide refunds for lessons missed by the student.

In the event the School of Musical Traditions cancels a lesson a student has already paid for (due to teacher absence, inclement weather, or any other unforeseen circumstance), the student may elect one of the following:

Credit for a future lesson (applied to the next billing cycle)
Refund for the lesson (applied at the end of the current billing cycle)
Credit in the amount of the lesson for a future group class or workshop

We will provide written notice of any cancellations. Simply respond in writing with your preference for a credit or refund.

The School of Musical Traditions may elect to take photos during lessons or classes. These photos may be used for promotional purposes. New students and/or their parent/guardian sign a photo release form when they sign up for lessons. All students will be notified if/when pictures are being taken and will have the option to opt out of photos.

Vaccine & Mask Policy
We welcome many students and teachers into our studios every day and are conscious of the dangerous potential for disease transmission. The following policies and recommendations are in place to maximize the health of our entire community.

All teachers and workshop hosts who teach in-person lessons & classes in SMT studios & affiliated spaces are fully vaccinated.

Vaccinations are required and the booster is recommended for all teachers and students (assuming the student is of an appropriate age to receive the vaccine).

Masks are required at all times in our studios, regardless of vaccination status. Facial coverings must fully cover your nose and mouth.

Please do not attend your lesson if you currently have COVID or symptoms of any contagious illness.

Virtual Lessons
Virtual lessons are always available for any student who prefers to learn from home, for any reason.

Similarly, a teacher who is experiencing mild illness may teach virtually from home.

If you prefer a virtual lesson at any time, simply write to your teacher and/or lessons@schoolofmusicaltraditions.com so your teacher knows to provide you with a Zoom link.

Cancellation
We do not offer refunds or credits for illness-related cancellations, per our standard attendance policy. We encourage you to elect the option of a virtual lesson in the event of a mild illness. It is sometimes possible to arrange a makeup lesson, depending on the availability of the teacher and student.
